From relaxing base camps we day hike, fish for lake trout or just enjoy nature. We explore this beautiful lake and the surrounding ridges and peaks within the following 6 days. The tour starts and ends in the small town of Kenai. If you arrive in Anchorage, we can arrange a pick up or book you on a flight to Kenai.
Lake Clark National Park offers a view of Alaska from its best. Icy volcanic peaks to open treeless tundra, the remote and very little visited National Park in South West Alaska offers a variety of ecosystems and wildlife.
Day 1: Kenai and Twin Lakes
We load our gear into a float plane and fly across the Cook Inlet into the glaciated Chigmit Mountains, a part of the Aleutian Range.
Our pilot drops us at the east end of the upper Lake, where we set up our first camp.
Day 2 to day 7: We day hike into the surrounding mountains and explore the lake by canoe.
A visit of Dick Proenneke’s cabin, the author of the best selling diary “One Man’s Wilderness” is on our program. He built this cabin in 1968 and lived here until a few years ago. From our camp near the stream that connects the upper and lower lake, we hike into the mountains and try to reach the pass to the Kijik River Valley. Those who want can summit one of the surrounding peaks.
We continue canoeing across the lower Twin Lake to our campsite in a small sheltered bay. The following hike shows us a rock desert-like valley. We’ll escape it and climb up the green meadows until we get a wonderful view over Twin Lakes and the mountains surrounding them.
We break camp and canoe towards the outlet of the lower lake, the Chilikadrotna River. A short hike to small ponds around our camp will end the active part of our trip.
Day 8: Flight back to Kenai
Today we get picked up by a float plane and we fly back to the town of Kenai.
